Set beside the River Wansbeck, the delightful village of Mitford has the ruins of a castle, an exceptionally fine parish church, and an outstanding hostelry, The Plough Inn. It is owned and run by Helen Shand, a welcoming host who has always wanted to run a pub and now presides over one of the best. The inn has two bars, each with its open fire, as well as a pleasant beer garden. Quality beers, real ales, fine wines and spirits are all available as well as tea and coffee. The Plough is well-known locally for the quality of the appetising homemade food it serves which is traditional in essence but with a modern twist. The lunch and dinner menus, which change every 3 months, offer a good choice of dishes, including a vegetarian option. There’s also a separate menu for children and for Sunday lunch. On Tuesday evenings, the pub hosts a quiz night, starting at 8.30pm, on the first Sunday evening of the month, all local folk musicians are invited to “bring your fiddle, mouth organ, banjo or penny whistle to give us a tune!†So come on down and experience the wonderful atmosphere for yourself.
